Music Curriculum

With years of dedicated music training and teaching experience, we have developed a scientific and structured music curriculum designed to inspire and engage children and adults alike. Our approach includes specialized music classes for kids and adults, focusing on both Carnatic Vocal and Hindustani Vocal techniques. We also offer an examination and certification program to encourage students to love, practice, perform, and continue learning music—all in a joyful and pressure-free environment.

The Heritage School of Performing Arts is proudly affiliated with Sarva Bharatiya Charukala Mandir, an esteemed institution recognized by the Government of West Bengal, India. Through this collaboration, we offer an examination and certification program for students interested in pursuing formal recognition of their musical training, including Carnatic Vocal and Hindustani Vocal. 


Our curriculum is closely aligned with and inspired by the official syllabus of Sarva Bharatiya Charukala Mandir, ensuring a structured and comprehensive learning path, whether for music classes for adults or music classes for kids.

Music for Kids

Our music classes for kids are thoughtfully designed to introduce children to the vibrant world of music. We offer a variety of classes, including Carnatic Vocal and Hindustani Vocal, for children of all ages, from toddlers to teenagers. Additionally, we provide music classes for adults, ensuring everyone can explore their musical talents. Our experienced teachers will guide your child through an engaging examination and certification program, helping them develop a lifelong love for music.

Music for Adults

Our music classes for seniors are a fun and engaging way to stay active and social, and we also offer specialized music classes for adults and kids, including Carnatic Vocal and Hindustani Vocal. We cater to seniors of all abilities, from beginners to advanced students, ensuring everyone can participate. Our experienced teachers will work with you to develop a personalized learning plan, which can also include an examination and certification program that meets your musical aspirations.

Hindustani Vocal

Level 1


Foundation

Will Learn - Sa Re Ga Ma, Palta, Breathing, Concept of Taal (Rhythm), Tempo, Playing Harmonium/keyboard, 2 songs, Introduction to Indian Classical Music and its styles including Hindustani Vocal and Carnatic Vocal.

Can Perform - Sing easy songs in tune, Reaching correct notes and pitch, Follow Tempo and Taal, Basic play of Harmonium/keyboard.


Preliminary

Will Learn - Intermediate Palta, Details on Classical Music, 2 Raaga, 2 Taal, Flat, Natural, and Sharp notes, 2 Light Songs, suitable for students in music classes for kids.

Can Perform - Sing Raaga with basic level Aalaap, Bandish, and Taan, light songs. Play harmonium/keyboard.


First Year

Will Learn - More Palta, 5 Raaga, Bhajan, 3 Taal, More Flat, Natural, and Sharp notes, 2 Light Songs. Doubling tempo, preparing for the examination and certification program.

Can Perform - Sing Raaga, Bhajan, Light songs playing Harmonium/keyboard.


Level 2


Second Year (Receive Junior Diploma)

Will Learn - Advanced Palta, 5 Intermediate Raaga, Bhajan, 3 Intermediate Taal, 2 light songs, Introduction to Tanpura, enhancing skills for music classes for adults.

Can Perform - Recognize Raaga and Taal. Sing relatively difficult songs. Better voice control on singing.


Third Year (Receive Senior Diploma)

Will Learn - 5 advanced Raaga, Bhajan, Dhrupad, Dhamar, 3 advanced Taal, accompanying with Tanpura, 2 light songs.

Can Perform - Recognize Raaga and Taal. Sing relatively difficult songs. Advanced level classical singing (Raaga, Bhajan) accompanying with Tanpura and Aalaap, Bistar, Bandish, and Taan.


Level 3


Fourth Year

Will Learn - More advanced Raaga, Kheyal, Dhrupad, Dhamar, advanced Taal.

Can Perform - Pro level classical singing with Tanpura and other classical instruments, suitable for those pursuing further studies in Hindustani Vocal and Carnatic Vocal.


Fifth Year (Receive Sangeet Visharad)

Will Learn - More advanced Raaga, Kheyal, Dhrupad, Dhamar, Thumri.

Can Perform - Pro level classical singing with Tanpura and other classical instruments.

Carnatic Vocal

Level 1

All the following should be learnt in our music classes for kids and adults.

I. Sarali Varisaigal                 -             16

II. Janta Varisaigal                 -              7

III. Alankaram                         -              6

To pass the level in our Carnatic Vocal examination and certification program, students should know the following:

1. Names of Sapta Swaras.

2. Names of Sapta Talas.

3. Adi Thalam – Student should know how to count and show the Thalam.

4. Technical Terms: Carnatic Music, Swaram, Swaravali, Jantavarisai.

5. Ability to perform I, II and III in 3 speeds or at least 2 speeds.

6. Knowledge of parts of a Thalam.

7. Knowledge of 3 Sthayis or Octaves.


Level 2


All the following should be learnt.


I. Geethams (10) in 2 speeds or at least 1 speed.

II. Divya Nama Keerthanam (1).

III. Identify Raaga when Aarohanam/Avarohanam is sung (for Geetham Ragas).

IV. Sing Aarohanam/Avarohanam when Raaga name is given (for Geetham)


- Maya Malavagoula

- Malahari

- Saaveri

- Mohanam

- Sudha Saaveri

- Kalyani

- Aarabhi

- Sree Ragam


To pass the level, students should perform the following:


1. Ability to sing a Geetham in 2 speeds.

2. Ability to identify a Raaga (Geetham Raaga).

3. Ability to sing Aarohanam/Avarohanam for Geetham Raaga.

Level 3

The following will be taught and has to be performed to pass the level.

1. Aadi Thala Varnam.

- Ability to sing in 2 speeds.

2. Ability to sing aKaram, eKaraam, mKaram in Jantai and Alankaram in 2 speeds.

3. Ability to sing Akara for Varnams in 2 speeds.

4. Students begin to learn Keerthanais and should be able to sing a simple Keerthanai.

Level 4

1. Students continue to learn Keerthanais and have to be able to sing simple Keerthanais.

2. Ability to sing Ada Thala varnam in 2 speeds.

3. Ability to sing Nava Raaga Malika Varnam in 2 speeds.

4. Learning more Aadi Thala Varnam (2 Speeds).

5. Learning to compose Raagam, Neraval and Kalpana Swaras for a Krithi.

6. Ability to sing Thillana and PanchaRatna Keerthanai.
